Default Dimensions in D365 Finance

Linking financial dimensions to master records (Customers, Vendors, Products) via integrations in Dynamics 365 Finance requires a specific data format.

The Key Field: DefaultDimensionDisplayValue

Unlike the user interface, integrations (OData, DMF, Power Automate) do not use separate fields for each dimension. Instead, they use a single string field called DefaultDimensionDisplayValue.

  • Logic: A concatenated string of values based on how they were defined in D365 Finance (General ledger > Chart of accounts > Dimensions > Financial dimension configuration for integrating applications).
  • Delimiter: Use the system-defined character (usually a hyphen - or pipe |).

 String Formatting Rules

The string must be precise. The system counts the segments; if the count is wrong, the integration will fail.

  • Full Values: If every dimension has a value: 1400-1000-110-RES01
  • Skipping Middle Values: If a middle dimension is blank, keep the delimiters: 1400--110-RES01 (Department is empty).
  • Trailing Blanks: If the final dimensions are empty, include the trailing delimiters: 1400-1000-110- (Resource is empty).

Integration Example: Mapping to DefaultDimensionDisplayValue

When integrating, you must convert the visual fields in D365 into a single concatenated string. This table shows how to format that string based on different scenarios for a new customer.
