A transfer that creates or updates HubSpot records with an `associations` block can fail with a 400 and the message `one or more associations are not valid`. The properties in the payload are fine — HubSpot is rejecting the record we're trying to associate to. This article explains how to read the error, identify which of the common causes applies, and fix it.

## Example

**Connection:** HUBSPOT001

**Data sent to REST service:**

JSON:

```
{  "inputs": [    {      "properties": {        "dealname": "AA-TSI+00028833",        "no_customer_id": "MM-CUST005688",        "customer_price_group_code": "DIRECT",        "payment_terms_due_date": "2026-08-28",        "payment_terms_code": "30 DAYS",        "invoice_number": "AA-TSI+00028833",        "pipeline": "default",        "dealstage": "closedwon",        "deal_tracking_number": "875066555555"      },      "associations": [        {          "to": { "id": "209268041545" },          "types": [            { "associationCategory": "HUBSPOT_DEFINED", "associationTypeId": "3" }         ]        }      ]    }  ]}
```

**Status code received:** `400 Bad Request`

**Response body:**

JSON

```
{  "status": "error",  "message": "one or more associations are not valid",  "correlationId": "019fc6da-3393-769f-bef5-cda3c4f563de",  "errors": [    {      "message": "0-1=209268041545 is not a valid object",      "context": { "validationResult": ["INVALID_FROM_OBJECT"] }    }  ],  "category": "BAD_REQUEST"}
```

## How to read the error

Two parts of the message matter:

- **`0-1`** is the HubSpot object type ID that HubSpot resolved from our `associationTypeId`. It tells us which object type HubSpot went looking in. `0-1` = Contacts, `0-2` = Companies, `0-3` = Deals, `0-5` = Tickets, `0-8` = Line Items.
- **`209268041545`** is the record ID we sent in the `to` block.

Together: _"No Contact exists with ID 209268041545."_

## Root Cause

- **Cause 1 : Wrong associationTypeId for the object being referenced (most common)**

The association type ID determines which object type HubSpot looks in. If we send a **Company** ID with a deal-to-contact type ID, HubSpot searches Contacts, finds nothing, and rejects the batch.
**Fix** : Check if you see the right association on your payload. If the invoice is supposed to be associated with a contact, then you don't need to look into it further. However, if it needs to be associated with a company, then update the mapping and choose the deal to company association instead.

**Common HubSpot-defined type IDs for Deals:**

| Association | Type ID |
| --- | --- |
| Deal → Contact | 3 |
| Deal → Company | 5 |
| Deal → Company (Primary) | 341 |
| Deal → Line Item | 19 |

- **Cause 2 : The record was deleted in HubSpot**

The ID was valid when it was captured, but the record has since been deleted by a user.

**Fix:** Check if contact Record ID 209268041545 still exists in your HubSpot portal. if not, then you would need to check if it needs to be restored or whether a new contact has been created and make the necessary adjustments either just in HubSpot or in your ERP as well - if there is a HubSpot reference on your ERP customers or contacts.
